Research has shown that radiation is more effective in tissue that has a normal oxygen level, and that large tumors have areas low in oxygen. This could mean that tumors are more resistant to radiation therapy. Aerospace medicine researchers are working with researchers in radiation oncology around the world - to study the use of HBOT in the treatment of tumours. Study participants receive hyperbaric oxygen therapy before they undergo standard radiation and chemotherapy - both treatments work better in tumours with adequate oxygen.
HBOT is a noninvasive treatment where the patient sits inside a hyperbaric chamber and breathes 100% oxygen at greater than atmospheric pressure. The increased pressure helps to dissolve the oxygen into the blood and body cells, tissues and fluids, at up to sixty times the normal concentration. This promotes oxygen transport to tissues in situations where the normal oxygen delivery pathways have been compromised due to such conditions as radiation injury, traumatic injury, tissue poisoning, edema, inflammation or poor circulation. Because normal physiological function and healing are dependent on oxygen, HBOT assists and enhances the body's natural healing processes and infection control mechanisms.
As mentioned, HBOT has proven to be very beneficial as an adjunctive treatment for cancer patients. Hypoxia, or oxygen deprivation, noted in malignant tumours, increases the resistance of cancer cells to radiotherapy. Increasing tumour oxygenation increases radiotherapy efficacy (Radiosensitizer). Research shows that Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) increases singlet oxygen in cancer cells, and thus the desired oxygenation efficiencies are realized in a safe, noninvasive way.
There is an impressive foundation of evidence to support the use of HBOT in treating both acute and delayed radiation tissue injury. Many patients who receive radiation to the pelvic area for example, often suffer with cystitis or colitis post-radiation. We have found HBOT to be the most effective treatment in managing these and many other side effects of radiotherapy.

Our chambers meet CSA standards and follow the regulations, codes and standards of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) / Pressure Vessel for Human Occupancy (PVHO) and the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) 99: Standard for Health Care Facilities rules as they pertain to hyperbaric facilities. The hyperbaric chambers are compressed with medical grade air and once treatment pressure is attained, the patient will then don either a mask or an oxygen hood to commence the breathing of medical grade, 100% oxygen. Our hyperbaric chambers have the ability to change the seating configuration depending on the needs and comforts of the patient.
The choices include either a fully supported, upright chair (which is great for reading) or they are able to choose the pillow and cushions option for a relaxed and semi-inclined position which is ideal for watching their favourite movie on a dedicated TV for each chamber. Communication between the patient and the technician is important during all stages of treatment. For ease on the patient's behalf, the communication units are always set on 2-way which means that the patient is able to hear and speak to the technician at anytime without touching any controls or buttons.
