Nexplanon® Contraceptive Implants

Say hello to the Contraceptive implant, a small, flexible rod containing etonogestrel (a type of progestin). It is inserted under the skin of your upper arm and provides up to three years of contraception! There is one brand in Canada- Nexplanon®.

But how does it work, you ask?
The implant releases a steady low dose of the hormone progestin, which inhibits ovulation, and thickens cervical mucus to prevent sperm from reaching the egg. It also thins the lining of the uterus to make it less receptive to implantation. Often women will lose their period for the duration of the implant.
What are some of the benefits?
One of the biggest benefits of the contraceptive implant is its long-lasting nature. Once inserted, it can provide up to three years of birth control without any maintenance or daily effort required. Plus, because it’s a progestin-only method, it’s safe for breastfeeding mothers and those who can’t take estrogen.
How is it inserted?
Freezing is applied and one of our trained naturopathic doctors, uses the applicator to place the small rod just under the skin of the non- dominant arm. A small bandage is applied and kept in place for 3-4 days. Some mild bruising or skin irritation may occur. Both the insertion and removal visits are simple, in office procedures taking only 10-15 minutes.
