Botulinum toxin (trademarked Botox or Dysport) is the only approved treatment to temporarily improve the appearance of both moderate to severe frown lines between the brows and crow’s feet lines in adults.

Is Botulinum toxin safe? A well-studied treatment!

Botox/Dysport is one of the most extensively studied medical aesthetic treatments and is approved or cosmetic use in 78 countries. The safety and efficacy has been evaluated in 417 peer-reviewed articles in scientific and medical journals.

Where is Botulinum toxin sourced from?

Derived from sources that exist in nature, Botox contains tiny amounts of a highly purified botulinum toxin protein refined from the bacterium, Clostridium botulinum. Approximately 10.9 million vials of Botox have been sold in the United States since 2002, and millions of people have already made Botox a part of what they do for themselves.

How does Botulinum toxin work?

Botox/Dysport targets one of the underlying causes of frown lines and crow’s feet—the repeated muscle contractions from frowning and squinting over the years. Your provider will inject these muscles with Botox or Dysport to temporarily reduce muscle activity. Over the course of a few days, you will begin to notice a visible smoothing of your crow’s feet lines and frown lines between your brows.

Wrinkles result from a combination of many factors. It’s not just about cellular changes that can occur over time, reduction of collagen, or damage caused by free radicals in the sun and the environment. When you frown or concentrate, the muscles between your brows contract, causing your skin to furrow and fold. And when you squint, the muscles around your eyes contract and cause crow’s feet. Botox works beneath the skin’s surface and targets the underlying muscle activity that causes frown lines and crow’s feet.

Baby Botox? Does it work?

Drs Dawson and McGee often use the smallest doses of botox needed– ‘baby botox’ to weaken muscles, but not eliminate muscle movement. This provides a more natural look. The recent trend has definitely moved towards the more natural look; gone are the days of the frozen or the surprised botox look. “Baby Botox’ can be used earlier in younger patients to prevent formation of wrinkles and will also prevent the necessity of using larger dose in future. ‘Baby botox’ gives our patients the choice. If they want the normal dose treatment, Drs Dawson and McGee will apply their techniques to achieve very effective, long lasting but still very natural results without the frozen look. Baby botox however, can be used for those patients who want to be even more minimal and more natural, or those who just don’t want it to last too long. You will work with your doctor to decide on the best approach to reach your individual preference and goals.

Will Botox/Dysport make me look like I’ve had work done?

Botulinum toxin is a technique-sensitive treatment. You should not lose the ability to show expression when you are treated by someone who is licensed, trained, and a medical expert in facial anatomy. It is important to talk to your provider about the results you want from treatment.
