Magnesium Oxide for Chronic Constipation

Magnesium Oxide for Chronic Constipation: Does It Work?

Chronic constipation affects millions and can seriously impact quality of life. A 2019 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility looked at whether magnesium oxide, a common over-the-counter supplement, could offer real relief.

In the study, 34 adults with chronic constipation took either magnesium oxide or a placebo for 28 days. The results were clear: the group taking magnesium oxide had significantly more bowel movements, better stool consistency, and less bloating compared to the placebo group. It worked by drawing water into the intestines, making stool softer and easier to pass.

Magnesium oxide was also well tolerated, with no serious side effects reported. This makes it a potentially effective and accessible option for people struggling with chronic constipation, especially those looking for an alternative to stimulant laxatives.

Bottom line: If you’re dealing with persistent constipation, magnesium oxide might be a simple, low-risk option worth discussing with your healthcare provider.
